Summer is peak season for garage floor coating inquiries in the Katy TX area. It's also when the most coating failures happen — because high heat creates real problems for standard epoxy. Here's what you need to know before scheduling a summer install.
The Problem with Standard Epoxy in Texas Summer
Standard two-part epoxy has a narrow application temperature window. Most manufacturers recommend application between 50–90°F air temperature and below 90°F substrate (concrete surface) temperature. In a Texas garage facing west or south during July, the concrete surface temperature can reach 130–160°F by noon. That's 40–70°F above the upper limit for standard epoxy.
Applying epoxy to hot concrete causes:
- Flash curing — the coating skins over before it can bond properly
- Bubbling — outgassing from the heated concrete pushes through the wet coating
- Poor adhesion — the rapid cure doesn't allow full penetration into the surface profile
- Pinhole pitting — micro-bubbles burst in the surface as they cure
Why Polyaspartic Works in Texas Summer
Polyaspartic has a significantly wider application window than standard epoxy. Quality polyaspartic systems can be applied to surfaces up to 120°F+ without the adhesion failures and cure problems that standard epoxy develops in heat. The chemistry cures differently — it doesn't have the same temperature sensitivity during application.
This is one of the primary reasons we install polyaspartic in Texas: it was designed for the conditions that standard epoxy struggles with.
Still timing matters: Even with polyaspartic, summer installs in Texas require morning start times — typically 7–8 AM before the floor surface heats up. By starting early, we're applying to a 70–80°F surface instead of a 130°F one. The coating cures fully before afternoon heat hits.
Summer Install Tips
- Schedule for an early morning start — 7–8 AM arrival is standard for summer installs
- Close the garage door the night before to keep the floor cooler overnight
- Don't run vehicles in the garage the morning of install — exhaust heating warms the concrete
- Choose polyaspartic, not standard epoxy, for any summer install in Texas
