How Densifiers Work

Sodium silicate and lithium silicate densifiers penetrate the concrete surface and react with calcium hydroxide (free lime) in the concrete to form calcium silicate hydrate — the same compound that gives concrete its strength. This reaction densifies the pore structure, increases surface hardness, and reduces dusting. Lithium silicate is generally preferred for reactive or high-silica concretes; sodium silicate is effective on most standard mixes.

When to Use vs. When to Grind

Densifier is appropriate for: lightly dusty concrete with surface CSP already adequate for epoxy, floors where grinding would bring depth below aggregate and damage structural integrity, and very old concrete with carbonated surface that responds well to chemical treatment. Grinding is required when: the weak layer is thick (>1/16"), oil or curing compound contamination is present, or the existing surface profile is inadequate. In most Katy TX cases, we grind first, then apply densifier as a pre-primer step.

Application Protocol

Densifier is applied to clean, dry, mechanically profiled concrete by sprayer or roller, allowed to penetrate for 15–30 minutes, then redistributed with a scrubber. Excess material is removed before it dries on the surface (dried excess creates a powdery deposit that must be ground off). Full chemical reaction takes 24–72 hours. After densifier cure, the surface is tested for adequate hardness before primer application.

Epoxy Compatibility

Most silicate densifiers are compatible with epoxy primer if fully cured. However, some sodium silicate products leave an alkaline residue that can interfere with amine-cured epoxy primers. We specify densifiers rated for use under epoxy coating, not generic concrete hardeners from the janitorial supply industry. Product compatibility is not something to assume — we verify with the manufacturer's technical data sheet.
