Scratch resistance is a legitimate durability concern for any garage floor — you're parking cars, moving tools, and occasionally dropping things. Here's what to expect from a polyaspartic system under real garage use.
Polyaspartic Is Hard — Not Fragile
Polyaspartic topcoat is rated at 80–100 Shore D hardness — harder than most floor paints and harder than standard epoxy. Normal garage use doesn't noticeably scratch it:
- Vehicle tires rolling in and out: no scratching
- Dropped hand tools: typically dents (impact) rather than scratches, and minor at that
- Rubber-wheeled floor jacks and carts: no scratching
- Boot and shoe traffic: no impact on the topcoat
What Can Scratch or Mark the Surface
- Steel-wheeled equipment: Metal wheels dragged across the surface — steel shop cart wheels, old steel-framed jacks — can leave fine scratches in the topcoat over time.
- Dragging rough metal: Sliding a metal object with a sharp edge across the floor.
- Abrasive grit: Sand and grit tracked in from outside can cause micro-scratching over years. Regular sweeping prevents this.
- Heavy impact: Dropping a heavy piece of cast iron or a metal bar from height creates an impact mark, not a scratch — and is unavoidable with any flooring.
Why flake systems hide wear: A full-flake broadcast finish has thousands of color variations per square foot. Minor surface wear, micro-scratches, and small scuffs blend into the speckled pattern and become virtually invisible. Solid-color floors show every mark because there's no visual pattern to disguise it.
Protecting High-Use Areas
For high-traffic tool areas or workshop zones, a rubber mat under a workbench or wheel stop at the parking position adds protection against the most abrasive activities. This isn't required — it's optional for people who want to preserve the appearance in specific areas.
