Epoxy Floor Flake Size Guide for Katy Garages

1/4-inch, 1/8-inch, or 1/16-inch chips? How flake size shapes the look, texture, and durability of your floor.

The decorative chips broadcast into an epoxy floor — sometimes called flakes — do more than add color. Their size shapes the entire look of your garage, from a fine, uniform speckle to a bold, terrazzo-like pattern. If you're planning a coated floor in Katy, here's how to choose the right flake size for your space.

What Are Epoxy Flakes?

Flakes are thin chips of colored vinyl broadcast onto the wet base coat. They add visual depth, hide minor slab imperfections, provide slip resistance, and let you blend custom colors. After the base cures, the excess is scraped and vacuumed away and a clear topcoat locks the embedded chips in place. Flakes come in several standard sizes, usually measured by their diameter.

1/4-Inch Flakes: Bold and Dramatic

Quarter-inch chips are the largest commonly used size. They create a striking, high-contrast look that reads almost like natural stone or terrazzo from a distance. Because the individual chips are large and distinct, they excel at hiding slab imperfections and patched cracks — useful on older Katy slabs that have seen decades of clay movement. The trade-off is a more textured surface and a bolder aesthetic that not every homeowner wants.

1/8-Inch Flakes: The Versatile Middle

Eighth-inch chips are the most popular choice for residential garages. They strike a balance between visual interest and a clean, finished look, blending into a cohesive pattern while still adding depth and good slip resistance. This size suits almost any color blend and works well in both traditional and modern garages, which is why it's our default recommendation for most Katy homeowners.

Quick Guide

Go larger (1/4") for a bold, stone-like look and maximum imperfection hiding. Go medium (1/8") for the most versatile, broadly appealing finish. Go small (1/16") for a subtle, uniform, contemporary look. There is no wrong answer — only the right fit for your taste and slab.

1/16-Inch Flakes: Subtle and Modern

Sixteenth-inch chips create a fine, almost granite-like texture. From standing height the floor reads as a smooth, uniform color with gentle variation. This size appeals to homeowners who want an understated, contemporary finish or a garage floor that complements modern interiors. Because the chips are small, they hide imperfections less than larger flakes, so they're best on slabs in good condition.

Coverage: Full Broadcast vs. Partial

Beyond size, how heavily we broadcast the flakes matters. A full broadcast (also called "to refusal") covers the base coat completely, so almost none of the base color shows through. This gives the richest look, the best slip resistance, and the most durable surface, and it's what we recommend for garages. A partial broadcast leaves some base color visible for a lighter, more economical accent finish.

Design and Color Considerations

Flakes come in pre-mixed blends and custom combinations. Lighter blends brighten a garage and make it feel larger; darker blends hide dust and dirt between cleanings. Multi-tone blends with a hint of contrast are forgiving of everyday grime, while single-tone looks feel cleaner and more modern. We'll bring samples so you can see chip size and color together on a sample board before deciding.

Slip Resistance and Texture

Larger flakes and heavier broadcasts naturally add more surface texture, which improves traction — an advantage in a garage where water and the occasional spill are inevitable. If you want extra grip, we can also add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat regardless of flake size, tuning the texture to your preference.

Which Size Is Right for You?

The best flake size depends on your slab condition, your interior style, and how bold you want the floor to look. There's no universally correct answer, which is why we walk every Katy customer through samples in person. Schedule a free on-site evaluation and we'll bring sample boards, assess your slab, and help you choose a flake size and color blend that fits your garage.
