Metallic epoxy is the most visually distinctive floor finish we install — a high-gloss, three-dimensional surface that reflects light like polished stone or liquid metal. It's increasingly popular in Katy and west Houston homes with show-quality garages, large open living spaces, and luxury home theaters or man caves. Here's what it actually is, what it looks like in person, and how it compares to a standard chip floor in terms of cost and durability.
How Metallic Epoxy Works
A metallic epoxy system consists of a 100% solids epoxy base coat tinted to a neutral color, followed by a second coat with ultra-fine metallic pigment (mica particles, aluminum flake, or pearl pigments) mixed in. The pigment coat is applied with a squeegee and roller, then manipulated with a leaf blower or brush while still wet to create movement — swirls, waves, veining, and depth effects.
Because the effect is created by moving wet material, no two metallic floors look identical. The installer's technique, pigment quantity, and the specific movement patterns determine the final appearance. This makes metallic epoxy one of the few truly custom floor finishes — the floor in your garage will not look exactly like any other metallic floor in any other garage.
The final topcoat is a high-gloss aliphatic polyaspartic — the same UV-stable topcoat we use on all our floors. This locks in the metallic effect, provides a hard, wear-resistant surface, and ensures the floor doesn't yellow in UV.
