Epoxy & Polyaspartic
Pool Deck Coatings

A bare concrete pool deck in a Katy summer gets blistering hot, becomes slippery when wet, and stains from pool chemicals. The right coating system addresses all three — without trapping heat or creating glare.

Pool deck concrete is one of the most demanding environments for any coating system. It faces full UV exposure, repeated wet/dry cycles, chlorine and chemical splash, foot traffic while wet, and Houston's extreme summer heat — all at the same time. A coating system that works perfectly in a garage will fail outdoors in 1–3 years if it's not formulated for exterior use. Selecting the right system requires understanding what each of those demands requires from the chemistry.

What a Pool Deck Coating Must Do

☀️

UV Stability

Must not yellow, chalk, or lose gloss under direct Houston sun. Aromatic epoxy will degrade visibly within one season. Only aliphatic polyaspartic topcoats are appropriate for full sun exposure.

💧

Slip Resistance

A wet pool deck is a liability. The topcoat must incorporate anti-slip aggregate — broadcast silica sand, aluminum oxide, or rubber granules — at sufficient rate to provide grip when saturated.

🌡️

Surface Temperature

Dark coatings on concrete in direct sun can reach 140–160°F — painful to bare feet. Light colors and heat-reflective pigments reduce surface temps significantly.

🧪

Chemical Resistance

Pool water (chlorinated, pH-adjusted) splashes onto the deck constantly. Shocking events produce brief high-chlorine concentrations. The coating must resist these without bleaching or softening.

The Right System for Katy Pool Decks

Standard garage epoxy systems are not appropriate for pool decks. The aromatic epoxy base coat will yellow under UV within months. The polyaspartic topcoat used on garage floors is the right topcoat chemistry, but the aggregate rate must be increased for wet-surface slip resistance, and the color palette should favor lighter tones to manage surface temperature.

Our pool deck system: light-colored concrete primer → 100% solids aliphatic epoxy or polyaspartic base coat → full anti-slip aggregate broadcast (aluminum oxide, 36 grit) → aliphatic polyaspartic topcoat (UV-stable, gloss or satin). This system is rated for continuous outdoor exposure and will hold color and adhesion through multiple Houston summers.

Pool Deck Color and Surface Temperature

Surface temperature is a serious consideration in Katy, where summer air temperatures routinely hit 95–100°F and direct sun can heat a dark horizontal surface to 150°F+. Barefoot pool deck use at those temperatures causes burns — and children are more vulnerable than adults because they don't lift their feet quickly enough.

Color ChoiceApproximate Surface Temp (Peak Summer Sun)Barefoot Comfort
White / light beige100–115°FManageable — uncomfortable but not burning
Light grey115–125°FUncomfortable for extended standing
Medium grey125–140°FPainful for barefoot kids; limit direct standing
Charcoal / dark grey145–165°FBurn hazard — not recommended for pool decks

We recommend white or light beige for all Katy pool decks where bare foot traffic is expected. This is purely a safety and comfort decision — the coating performs equally well in any color.

Pool Chemical Compatibility

Standard pool water (1–3 ppm free chlorine, pH 7.2–7.6) is not aggressive toward properly formulated polyaspartic topcoats. The chemistry concern is with "shocking" events — raising chlorine to 10+ ppm for algae treatment — and with muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) used for pool pH adjustment. Muriatic acid should never be poured or splashed on a coated pool deck; always neutralize and rinse if contact occurs.

Salt chlorinator systems (which produce hypochlorous acid in the water) are generally compatible with polyaspartic pool deck coatings and are no more aggressive than standard chlorinated pool water.

Existing Stamped or Painted Decks: If your pool deck already has a decorative stamp coating, acrylic paint, or a previous epoxy attempt, the existing coating must be tested for adhesion before new material is applied. Applying polyaspartic over a failing acrylic deck paint will delaminate with the paint underneath. We'll test adhesion on inspection and tell you whether the existing material needs to be removed first.
