A professional epoxy installation is a 2-day process that temporarily turns your garage into a job site. A little preparation on your end makes the job run smoother, faster, and with better results. Here's the complete homeowner checklist — organized by when to do it — plus a clear timeline of what happens on each day.

Complete Homeowner Checklist

1 Week Before — Planning

Arrange alternate vehicle parking for 2 full days Your vehicles cannot go back in the garage until the topcoat has cured — typically 24 hours after Day 2. Plan for driveway, street, or neighbor parking for Day 1 through the morning of Day 3.
Note any floor drain locations and discuss with contractor Floor drains need to be protected during coating. Let us know if you have a drain and whether you want it coated around or left accessible.
Identify and note any cracks, stains, or problem areas Walk the floor and mark anything you want us to pay special attention to — deep cracks, oil stains, areas where a previous coating failed. We'll assess all of it, but knowing what you've observed helps.

2–3 Days Before — Clearing

Remove all vehicles, equipment, and stored items from the garage The entire floor must be completely clear. Everything — cars, motorcycles, tools, shelving, boxes — must be removed before we arrive. We cannot work around stored items.
Remove wall-mounted shelving if it has legs that contact the floor Freestanding shelving and workbenches that sit on the floor must be removed. Wall-mounted cabinets with no floor contact can stay. Ask us if you're unsure about a specific item.
Sweep the floor thoroughly Remove loose debris, dirt, and grit. We'll do our own thorough prep, but starting with a swept floor saves time and keeps dust out of the coating process.
Disconnect and move the garage refrigerator or freezer if present Refrigerators are heavy, hard to move mid-job, and leave condensation marks. Move them out before installation day. Note: don't move a running freezer to a non-climate-controlled space in Katy summers.

Day Before Installation

Check the weather forecast and note if rain is expected Epoxy cannot be applied if the garage is wet or if rain is actively entering the space. Covered garages are generally fine in rain — just let us know about your specific setup if there's concern.
Do NOT wash or wet-mop the floor the night before A wet slab takes longer to prep and can interfere with the moisture test. Leave the floor dry. If there's been recent rain entering the garage, let us know — we may want to push the start time.
Confirm the job start time and access arrangements We typically start between 7–8am. Confirm whether someone will be home or if a lockbox / keypad code is needed. The crew will need continuous access to the garage for both days.

What Happens During the 2-Day Installation

Day 1
AM
Surface preparation (diamond grinding)

The crew grinds the entire floor surface with diamond tooling to profile the concrete, remove contamination, and open the pores for coating adhesion. This is the loudest and dustiest part of the job. The grinders have vacuum shrouds to capture most dust, but expect some fine concrete dust in the garage during this phase (2–4 hours).

Day 1
Mid
Crack repair, edge work, and MVE primer (if applicable)

Any cracks are filled with semi-rigid polyurea filler. Edges are cut in carefully. If the slab tested above 3 lbs MVER at the estimate, the moisture barrier primer is applied and allowed to cure (typically 4–6 hours minimum).

Day 1
PM
Base coat application and decorative broadcast

The 100% solids epoxy base coat is applied by roller, followed immediately by the decorative chip or color broadcast. The floor is then left to cure overnight. The garage should remain closed and undisturbed.

Day 2
AM
Chip scrape, blow-off, and inspection

Loose chips are scraped and removed. The crew inspects the cured base coat for any issues before proceeding. In Katy's summer heat, the base coat is typically fully cured and ready for topcoat by 7–8am on Day 2.

Day 2
PM
Polyaspartic topcoat application and final cure

The aliphatic polyaspartic topcoat is applied in 1–2 coats. The floor is ready for foot traffic in 4–6 hours and vehicle traffic in 24 hours. Do not drive on the floor until the next morning minimum.

Heat note for Katy TX summers: In summer months (June–September), we typically start Day 1 early (7am) to complete the base coat application before peak afternoon heat. High heat accelerates cure times — which is mostly good, but it means the crew moves quickly during the application phase. In this weather, please ensure the garage is accessible right at the start time.
