New construction is a great time to coat your garage floor — the slab is clean, undamaged, and free of the contamination that complicates most residential jobs. But new concrete has its own timing requirement that's easy to get wrong. Here's what you need to know before scheduling your install.
The 28-Day Rule for New Concrete
Fresh concrete contains a significant amount of residual moisture that rises through the slab as it cures. This moisture vapor — even from a slab that looks and feels dry — can blister a coating from below if the floor is coated too early. Industry standard is to wait a minimum of 28 days after the slab is poured before coating. In Katy TX's humid climate, 30–60 days is safer.
A contractor who shows up to coat your new slab the week after pour is cutting a corner that puts your coating at risk.
How We Test New Slabs
We use a calcium chloride moisture test or relative humidity probe on new slabs to verify the moisture vapor emission rate (MVER) is within the acceptable range for our coating system before applying product. If a slab tests too high in moisture, we'll tell you and reschedule rather than coat over the problem.
Cane Island, Cross Creek Ranch, Harvest Green: We see a lot of new construction in these fast-growing Katy TX communities. If you're closing on a new build, schedule us after the 30-day mark for best results — the floor is easy to coat and the whole process is straightforward.
New Slab vs Older Slab
New slabs are easier to prep in almost every way: no oil contamination, no previous coating failure, minimal cracks or spalling. The grinding process is faster. The prep is more predictable. Homeowners moving into new construction are in the best position to get a long-lasting result because there's no history to deal with.
Coordinate With Your Builder
Some Katy TX builders offer add-on floor coatings as an upgrade — usually at above-market pricing. It's worth comparing that quote to an independent install. You'll often pay less and get a better product by scheduling your own installer after close.
