The Humidity Challenge
Houston averages 75–80% relative humidity year-round, with summer afternoons sometimes exceeding 90%. Epoxy cures via chemical reaction — and humidity affects that reaction in two ways: surface moisture on the concrete prevents proper adhesion (amine blush), and high ambient humidity slows cure time and can cause surface defects. This is why we're selective about installation timing.
Best Times to Install in Katy TX
Optimal installation conditions: dew point below 50°F (rare in summer), concrete surface temperature 50–90°F, ambient humidity below 70%, and rising temperature (morning application is better than evening because concrete temperature is rising, not falling toward dew point). October through March offers the most reliable installation windows in the Katy area. We can install in summer, but we're more selective about timing and product choice.
Summer Installation Strategies
For summer installations, we: (1) start before 7am to get below-dew-point conditions early; (2) use epoxy systems with extended pot life formulated for high temperatures; (3) apply thin coats to avoid heat-accelerated cure causing pinholes; (4) avoid afternoon application when concrete surface temperatures exceed 95°F; (5) use polyaspartic topcoats that are more humidity-tolerant than standard polyurethane.
Products Rated for the Gulf Coast
Not every epoxy system performs equally in Houston conditions. We specify products from manufacturers with documented performance in high-humidity environments — including systems tested by the military for tropical deployment. The chemistry matters: low-amine-blush hardeners, humidity-tolerant epoxy formulations, and UV-stable aliphatic topcoats. We don't use the same products in Katy TX that would be appropriate for Denver.
