Transmission & Brake Fluid Stains on Katy TX Garage Floors

Why These Fluids Are Worse Than Motor Oil

Motor oil is petroleum-based and responds well to alkaline degreasers. Transmission fluid (ATF) and brake fluid are synthetic or semi-synthetic — they have different chemical properties that make them harder to extract from concrete pores. Brake fluid (glycol-based) is actually water-soluble, which sounds easier, but it penetrates rapidly and deeply due to its low viscosity. ATF's red dye also stains concrete a reddish-pink that can show through lighter epoxy colors.

Identifying the Stain Type

Motor oil stains are typically dark brown to black with a greasy appearance. ATF stains are reddish-pink to brown. Brake fluid stains are often clear to light yellow with a specific chemical smell. Power steering fluid is similar to ATF. Coolant (antifreeze) is green or orange and is water-based — it evaporates and doesn't cause adhesion problems the same way oils do, though it can leave calcium deposits.

Removal Protocol for Synthetic Fluids

Synthetic fluid stains often require a two-step chemical approach: a specific synthetic fluid degreaser (different chemistry than standard alkaline cleaner) followed by an enzymatic cleaner that breaks down the organic compounds. After chemical treatment, diamond grinding is still required to remove the mechanically contaminated concrete layer. In severe cases, we apply a penetrating epoxy primer specifically rated for solvent-contaminated substrates.

Color Considerations

ATF's red stain can be visible through light-colored epoxy if the concrete isn't ground deeply enough. We grind until the stain is visually gone from the concrete surface. If residual color remains below the grind depth, we recommend a white or light gray pigmented primer as an opacifying layer before the decorative coat — this blocks any color migration that might occur as the concrete heats and the residual stain migrates upward.
