In most of the country, fall and spring are the ideal coating windows. Texas is different — our summers are genuinely too hot for some coating systems, our "mild" months can still have moisture issues, and winter barely exists. Here's how to think about timing in the Houston area.
Epoxy and polyaspartic coatings are temperature-sensitive chemical reactions. The ambient temperature, the concrete surface temperature, and the relative humidity at the time of application all affect how the coating cures, how well it bonds, and whether it traps air or solvent on its way to cure.
Apply outside the coating's approved temperature range and you risk: slow or incomplete cure, fisheyes, pinholes, blushing (a milky haze from moisture contamination), or outright delamination. The coating product sheet specifies minimum and maximum application temperatures — and those ranges exist for good reason.
Concrete temps drop into the 60–75°F sweet spot. Humidity is lower than summer. Shorter days means installers can work without the slab baking all morning. This is the premium window in the Houston area.
Mild temps, manageable humidity, and concrete hasn't had time to heat-soak from summer. Book early — this is a popular window and crews fill up fast.
Humidity climbs significantly in May. Concrete surface temps can reach 85–90°F by midday. Early morning application is possible with the right products, but it requires careful scheduling.
Slab surface temperatures regularly exceed 100°F in exposed garages. Many standard epoxy formulations specify a maximum surface temp of 90°F. Polyaspartic systems tolerate more heat but still require early-morning work windows or shade management.
Houston rarely gets cold enough to hit epoxy's minimum application temps (typically 50°F surface). Our "winter" is often in the 55–70°F range — a reasonable coating window, especially with no humidity pressure.
Air temperature is less relevant than concrete surface temperature. Concrete absorbs and holds heat. A slab sitting in a west-facing garage can be 20–30°F hotter than the air temperature on a clear afternoon. A surface temp gun (infrared thermometer) is the right tool — not looking out the window.
In Houston's summer months, a professional installer timing a job for early morning — starting at 7 AM when the slab is at its coolest — can often get within acceptable application windows even in July and August. This is why experienced local contractors can book summer jobs that would fail if installed at noon.
Humidity is the other variable: High relative humidity during cure can cause epoxy to blush — a milky surface haze from moisture contamination. Houston's May–September humidity is the most problematic window. A dehumidifier running in the garage during application and cure significantly reduces this risk and is standard practice for quality installations here.
| Month | Avg High (Houston) | Avg Humidity | Coating Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan – Feb | 62–67°F | Moderate | Good — ideal temps, lower humidity |
| Mar – Apr | 73–80°F | Moderate | Excellent — prime window |
| May | 86°F | High | Caution — schedule mornings only |
| Jun – Aug | 92–95°F | Very High | Challenging — early AM, right products |
| Sep | 90°F | High | Caution — easing by late month |
| Oct – Nov | 72–80°F | Moderate | Excellent — peak season |
| Dec | 64°F | Moderate | Good — quiet period, faster scheduling |
Ideal: October through April. Book in this window and you'll have easy scheduling, optimal conditions, and the full range of coating systems available to you.
Possible: May through September with a qualified contractor who uses polyaspartic-capable systems, schedules early morning, and manages humidity. Most professional installations in the Houston area happen year-round — summer just requires more care and the right product selection.
Never: DIY kit installation in July at noon. This scenario accounts for a disproportionate share of coating failures in the Houston area.
