When you book a professional epoxy floor, most of the heavy prep — grinding, crack repair, moisture testing — is our job. But a little homeowner preparation helps the install go smoothly and ensures the best possible result. Here’s a straightforward checklist for Katy and Houston homeowners.
Clear the Garage Completely
Before install day, remove everything from the floor: vehicles, shelving, tool chests, the fridge, bikes, and stored boxes. We need full, unobstructed access to the entire slab, including the corners and along the walls. If you have wall-mounted cabinets close to the floor, let us know so we can plan around them.
It helps to plan where you’ll keep your cars for a day or so, since vehicles can’t be in the garage during grinding, coating, and the initial cure.
Note Any Problem Areas
Point out cracks, pitting, previous coating attempts, oil stains, or spots that stay damp. We address all of these during prep, but knowing the history — especially past DIY epoxy or recurring moisture — helps us choose the right primer and approach for your slab.
What We Handle (So You Don’t Have To)
The technical prep is on us. We diamond-grind the concrete to the correct profile, repair cracks and joints, degrease and clean the surface, and run moisture testing when the slab warrants it. This professional surface preparation — not the coating itself — is what separates a floor that lasts a decade from a DIY job that peels in a year.
Install Day and After
On install day we’ll need access to power and water and a clear driveway. After we finish, stay off the floor for the time we specify (often the same evening for foot traffic and about 24 hours before parking with our fast-curing systems). We’ll give you simple care instructions before we leave.
Short version
Empty the garage, plan where to park for a day, and flag any cracks or damp spots. We take care of grinding, repairs, moisture testing, and coating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to clean or etch the floor myself first?
No. We handle all surface preparation, including diamond grinding and cleaning. Acid etching, which some DIY kits recommend, does not create as reliable a bond as mechanical grinding.
Do I have to move everything out of the garage?
Yes, please clear the entire floor before we arrive so we have full access to the slab. Vehicles also need to stay out during the install and initial cure.
How long will my garage be out of use?
Usually about a day for the install, then roughly 24 hours before you can park, thanks to our fast-curing polyaspartic systems.
What if my slab has cracks or stains?
Point them out, but don’t worry — we repair cracks and joints and address stains and moisture as part of professional prep.
